The Canterbury Covered Rink Facility project involved the redevelopment of the site and construction of a new, architecturally distinctive, and functionally versatile public skating venue.
Located adjacent to the Canterbury Recreation Complex in Ottawa Centre, the facility features a year-round, multi-purpose outdoor rink with a permanent roof and a refrigerated ice surface. Designed to enhance access to hockey and public skating during the four- to five-month ice-in season, the rink also accommodates warm-weather activities such as ball hockey, basketball, lacrosse, and a variety of community events throughout the rest of the year.
The project included extensive site preparation, multiple concrete pours, and the construction of a new covered structure. Mechanical and refrigeration upgrades were completed in both the new and existing facilities, including enhancements to the ice plant’s mechanical systems. To improve user experience, a new audio-visual and lighting system was installed. The exterior showcases a combination of metal siding and aluminum composite panels, reflecting the architectural team’s modern design intent. The scope also included full site servicing, parking lot improvements, and landscaping enhancements to integrate the facility into the surrounding community.
